Michigan's Center for Civic Engagement & Advocacy

Michigan's Primary Election takes place on Tuesday, August 2, 2022.

In our effort to encourage civic engagement by simplifying the political process, we would like to provide some knowledge on the upcoming Michigan's Primary Election.

Th primary election determines which candidate from each political party will be nominated for the General Election ballot.

There are several types of primaries, however, the main types are closed and open.

  • In a closed primary, voters can only cast their vote for the political party they're affiliated and registered with.

  • In an open primary, voters of any political affiliation are able to cast their vote and it doesn't register the voter with that party.

Since Michigan is an open primary state, voters do not have to be members of a party to vote in that party's primary.

You can cast your vote on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at your polling location or local clerk's office, or by absentee ballot! For more information about where to find your clerk, polling place, sample ballots or if you need to register or update your voter registration, click the button below to access the MI Secretary of State's site.
